Mr. Barton’s practice involves real estate and related business transactions.  He focuses on commercial, retail, resorts, condominium,  industrial, agricultural, and multi-family residential real estate acquisitions, sales, leasing, options, finance, development, and 1031 tax-deferred exchanges.  His projects include shopping malls and strip centers, golf courses and  resorts, condominium resorts, hotels, business  and industrial parks, energy facilities, national restaurants, office buildings, office condominiums, industrial and business parks, and multi-family residential ventures in all regions of the United States.  His clients include international, national, regional, and local industry leaders.  Mr. Barton is also experienced with the purchase and sale of water rights and water shares and with water contracts involving municipalities and water conservancy districts.  He is also knowledgeable in land-use planning and zoning. 

Mr. Barton is experienced in representing landlords and tenants alike in retail, office, restaurant, industrial, ground, and agricultural leases.  His clients include regional and national tenants and developers.

Mr. Barton’s practice also involves loan and financial transactions of various types on behalf of developers, banks, insurance companies, and other institutional lenders.  These transactions include real estate and asset based loans, tenant-in-common loans, construction loans, conduit loans, lines of credit, golf course and resort loans, energy project financing, and sale/leaseback financing.  Relevant real estate-based lending transactions include commercial, resort, office, industrial, multi-family residential projects, and multi-state and international transactions.

Mr. Barton’s experience with Utah water includes matters involving water rights title, beneficial use, and administrative procedures with the Utah State Engineer’s office. 

Mr. Barton currently serves on the firm’s 5-partner management committee, formerly acted as the administrative partner of the firm’s Salt Lake City office, and formerly headed up the firm’s Resort Practice Group. He is listed in the 2008 edition of Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyer for Business, for Real Estate. 

Mr. Barton is active in the Utah banking community.
